Taiwan is located far in the western Pacific Ocean, off the coast of mainland China. Taiwan consists of one main island, called Taiwan, and numerous small offshore islands. Taiwan has a land area of about 36,000 square kilometers, about 10% larger than Malaysia. The main island is very rugged, about two-thirds hilly, 390 km long, and 140 km wide at its widest point. This is also where the Tropic of Cancer passes through. The Han people began to migrate in large numbers to the main island in the first half of the 1600s, mostly from the coastal areas of southeastern China.
